Nimona
Hello Everyone!
Here is the title pick for our next meeting -
Nimona by ND Stevenson. Nimona follows the title character as they team up with Ballister Blackheart on his quest to overthrow The Institute.
I chose this title for a couple reasons
I love it.
It is very different from Persepolis. The art is different. It sits in the fantasy genre. However it is also critically acclaimed and was adapted into a film (currently streaming on Netflix). And so I am hoping we can have some good discussion contrasting the two.
Nimona was first published as a graphic novel in 2015 but was originally a webcomic on Tumblr from 2012 to 2014. It was asked at our first meeting what the line between a comic and a graphic novel is. I think Nimona is a great example of how nebulous those definitions can be. It was a comic when it was being posted on a schedule on the internet. But then it was collected and published as a complete story and it’s now a graphic novel. Why? Is there a rhyme or reason to how we label/refer to any kind of sequential art? (spoiler alert - I am putting these questions on our discussion sheet)
We will be meeting on March 6th at 7:00 at the Book Nook. I will again bring cookies. The Book Nook has copies of Nimona for sale and if we run out we can order more.
Cheers!
Alyssa
P.S. For those who are new to graphics and are getting used to flexing your visual literacy skills - I found this article from Vox on How to read a comic book that is very helpful to understanding the flow of a comic.
